A computer without a Processor, motherboard and RAM would be like a human without a heart, a soul and brain. Of all the bits and pieces that are assembled to build a computer, the most important, yet the smallest is the computer processor chip that processes data and carries out various tasks by balancing and coordinating the hardware and software. This is the brain of the computer which controls other components such as the hard drive, the memory, and it is the processor that unravels computer programs so that we are able to receive the output in a manner that is comprehensible and easily understood.
The motherboard is also a vital part of the computer without which it will be just an empty box. In layman language it can be compared to a circuit board that controls the functioning of the computer. Everything that makes your computer performs successfully such as the processor, the hard drives, keyboard, monitor, mouse etc. are all connected through various cables and mounted on the motherboard.
Since its inception in the late 1970’s motherboards have evolved to a great degree from large sizes to the smaller sized ones we see today. Apart from the models that are integrated with components such as sound and graphic cards, today’s motherboards also have the capacity for additional components and are built with slots for video presentations, and gaming among others.
The word RAM which stands for Random Access Memory is the most common type of memory usually found in computers, printers and mobile phones. This is basically a storage device that provides the data for processing. RAM needs a continuous supply of electricity without which it’s not possible to maintain data storage. If the power goes off suddenly, whatever data is stored in the RAM will be completely lost. RAM is also categorized as Static RAM (SRAM) and Dynamic RAM (DRAM). Once data is stored in SRAM it remains secure and even if the power goes off the information is safe. With DRAM, any new input is perceived and quickly responded to by an input clock signal.
One of the main reasons for your computer to be working like a tortoise could be that you don’t have enough RAM for all the things you needs doing. If the hour glass icon is making you want to tear your hair in frustration, especially if you’re multi tasking, your only solution may be to upgrade the RAM although this might not always work well enough for that annoying icon to vanish forever from your computer screen.
Lastly, let’s talk about overheating computers and what can be done about this problem faced by many computer users. Just like any other electronic device, computers too can heat up although they are designed to dissipate heat that could damage the hardware components of the unit. In normal circumstances the extra heat is blown away by the inbuilt cooling fan and ventilators. Newly designed models have very few or no heating problems in view of their superior designs and quality workmanship. A rare occurrence can be due to a blockage or a poorly built cooling fan system.
After everything is said and done, one thing we can be quite certain of is that the future of computers is looking bright; hopefully with very fast processors for multi media applications, tiny motherboards, exceptionally fast RAM and a cooling fan that never fails.
