Aye Min said he first became interested in painting old buildings in Yangon when he noticed a dilapidated mosque on Shwebontha Road in 1993. People PaintingsSince then he has made dozens of watercolour paintings of colonial-era buildings in Yangon, including the old railway headquarters on Bogyoke Road, Bogyoke Market, Yangon Railway Station, the High Court building and Yangon City Hall. Cheap Oil PaintingsAye Min said he normally sees old buildings through the eyes of an artist. ¡°When I visit Bogyoke Market, for example, I don¡¯t see the shops with all their products for sale. I stand gazing into the structure of the building. Animal Paintings I¡¯m always surprised by its splendour,¡± he said. Artist U Hla Tin Htun, vice chairman of Myanmar Traditional Artists and Artisans Organisation, which is headquartered at the market, agreed that the old building held great value in and of itself. Venice Paintings ¡°When Cyclone Nargis struck, some of the old roofing tiles were blown into the street. I kept a few as pieces of memorabilia. Boats Paintings They¡¯re stamped with the year of production, 1886. And the cobblestones on the streets in the market are still undamaged even though they¡¯re more than 100 years old,¡± he said.
